Setting the Scene:

Lying at the end of an unassuming gravel road off the Transpeninsular Highway, Punta China encompasses a verdant and unique estuary and a beautiful sand beach, with cliffs extending in both directions from its edges. The fertile land is cultivated predominately for artichoke crops and a small community of both farmers and fishermen make their home within the few miles of coastline accessible by the Punta China road. Overall, this is a place that is seldom-visited by tourists and often passed over for nearby Ensenada or Erendira. This gives Punta China that distinct Baja feeling of being miles removed from all other civilization, though it is in fact very close. Additionally, this area reportedly has the first unspoiled fishing conditions of any coastal region south of the border.

Unique sights:

La Bocana Estuary: Located at the mouth or "boca" of the Santo Tomas river, the estuary is fronted by a sand beach which gets overrun by salt water waves at high tide, flooding the estuary and helping to create a unique ecosystem. Many water birds can be spotted and camp sites are available alongside its shores, along with a convenience store.

Puerto Santo Tomas: The small fishing community and the resort/hotel of Puerto Santo Tomas is a unique destination, both for its stunning views and its excellent fishing opportunities. Boats (lanchas) are available for hire for fishing, surfing, or snorkeling excursions, and fresh fish is plentiful.

Getting there:

By Car: The turnoff for Punta China is between Kilometer 46 and 47 on the Transpeninsular Highway. There are signs to both Puerto Santo Tomas and Punta China. Follow the gravel road for 18 miles as it winds with the river bed, until you reach the coast. The Punta China beach can be accessed from the south (left-hand) road at the fork. Puerto Santo Tomas lies along the north road -- keep right through the community of La Bocana and curve around to the right, following the coastline for 3 more miles.

ABC Bus/Taxi: The ABC bus stop is in the town of Santo Tomas a few kilometers south of the turnoff for Punta China, along the main Transpenisular Highway, although you may be able to get dropped off right at the Punta China road. Taxis can be hired from Ensenada or Santo Tomas.
