About Punta China

Puerto Santo Tomas

A bit upscale from a hostel, the hotel/camping destination of Puerto Santo Tomas is perched right on the ocean-facing cliffs at the end of the Punta China road. From the ruggedness of the surroundings and utter seclusion, you'd never guess that you're only a stone's throw from Ensenada, as the crow flies.

Owned by Sam Saenz, originally an aerospace electrical engineer up in Texas, Puerto Santo Tomas is a wonderful place for anybody who loves fishing, peace and quiet, or just a breathtaking view.

Rooms come with various combinations of beds and facilities. All rooms have their own kitchens and a minimum occupancy, meaning that Puerto Santo Tomas will best suit groups rather than solo travelers on a budget. Linens, pillows, and blankets are included. An on-site restaurant is open only on demand. Economical camping is also available, with fire pits and full facilities.

Possible activities include: Snorkeling/Scuba, Fishing (Panga fishing trips and packages available), Hiking, Surfing, Boat tours (including whale watching, in season).

Rates: (Sales tax not included)

  • Rooms: $20-$25 USD per person per night (2 ppl. min)
  • Campsites: $7 USD per person per night

Location details: From Ensenada, take Highway 1 south. You will pass through the town of Maneadero. Continue south for about 15 miles. Between Kilometer 46 and 47, you will see a road sign on the right-hand side that reads "Puerto Santo Tomas". Proceed 150 feet past the sign and make a right turn (west) onto the gravel road. Continue for 18 miles, always keeping to the RIGHT whenever the road forks. As you pass through the small community of "La Bocana", veer to the right and climb the hill, heading north along the coast. Continue for 3 miles until the road ends at the Puerto Santo Tomas archway.

Getting there:

  • ABC bus from Tijuana - ask your bus driver to let you off at the gravel road to Punta China/Puerto Santo Tomas, or at the bus stop in the town of Santo Tomas (a few km further on).
  • From Ensenada - hire a taxi or hitch a ride.
  • See map at left!
