Hostel El Sauzal

A clean and quiet spot to sleep in El Sauzal, just 6 miles north of Ensenada. A great alternative to staying in Ensenada and a great first stop on your way South through Baja. This is one of the only Mexican-run hostels in Northern Baja!

Owned by a delightful Mexican woman named Maria, Hostel Sauzal runs a tight ship. Maria keep the grounds spotless, comfortable, and friendly. All rooms face onto a veranda with a view of the ocean. Hammocks and lounging space are plentiful, long with a barbeque, fire circle, and picnic table.

Dormitory beds are four to a room. Linens, pillows, and blankets are included. Mattresses are extra-long. Each bed has a reading lamp. Work desks and hot showers are available. A communal kitchen with full supplies is also available for use, although Maria cooks up a delicious, home-style breakfast each morning.

Other features: Parking, Laundry facilities, storage lockers, bike/board storage, reference library. English and Spanish spoken.

Rates: $15 USD per dormitory bed per night.

Location details: 70 miles south of the US/Mexico border along the Transpeninsular Highway. 6 miles north of Ensenada in the town of El Sauzal de Rodriguez.

Getting there:

  • ABC bus from Tijuana - ask your bus driver to let you off at the stoplight ("semaforo") in El Sauzal.
  • From Ensenada - grab a “micro” bus on Calle Miramar (at the Milano store) to El Sauzal for 5-10 pesos.
